Hartford, CT – Gov. Lamont and Lt. Gov. Bysiewicz picked up an endorsement from the American Federation of Teachers Connecticut. AFT Connecticut represents approximately 30,000 teachers and school support staff, nurses and healthcare professionals, higher education faculty and state and municipal government employees in nearly 90 local unions across Connecticut.

The endorsement from AFT-Connecticut comes on the heels of key support from unions across the state, including the AFL-CIO, and the CT State Building and Construction Trades Council.

“The members of AFT-Connecticut’s executive committee are proud to endorse Governor Ned Lamont and Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz for re-election. In their first term, Gov. Lamont and Lt. Gov. Bysiewicz were confronted with a global pandemic that flooded hospitals, temporarily closed schools and colleges and shuttered state agencies,” said AFT-CT President, Jan Hochadel.

“Still, their commitment to the members of our affiliated unions and the people they serve every day didn’t waiver. From making record investments in our schools and colleges, to improved oversight of hospitals and health facilities, to recognizing state employees for their commitment to public service, they’ve stepped up.”

“Gov. Lamont and Lt. Gov. Bysiewicz value our members’ collective contributions to Connecticut’s quality of life and they’ve earned our continued support.”

“I am grateful to earn the endorsement of AFT-Connecticut. Our teachers and healthcare professionals have done essential work for decades; during the dark days of COVID, Susan and I relied on their collaboration to move the state forward safely and quickly. We worked with the legislature to make targeted investments in our teachers and healthcare professionals– establishing new tools for recruitment, passing budgets that protect pensions and provide relief by putting money back in their pockets,” said Governor Lamont.

“We’ve still got work to do, but with some of the best schools and healthcare systems in the country, we’ve come pretty far already. I look forward to our continued work.”

“I am honored to receive the endorsement from AFT-Connecticut. Our teachers, school support staff, nurses, healthcare professionals, and municipal employees were on the front lines during the darkest days of the pandemic. Ned and I saw first hand how critical their work is to our state and how important their advocacy is to the families of Connecticut,” said Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz.

“Together, we have paid down a record amount of pension debt, established the best paid family, and medical leave program in the country and delivered $660 million dollars in tax relief. I look forward to continuing our progress together.”
